I’ll be the first to admit that my summer beauty routine is a little “extra.” I’m a big fan of beauty guru YouTube videos. I get sucked down the hole & come up for air hours later with no clue who I am anymore or how so many items got added to my makeup wishlist… If Ashley, Chez & myself were on a scale, I’d be the more extreme end when it comes to makeup and they’d be somewhere closer to normal. All that to say, I’m not a professional (clearly), but I really love makeup and how it can make a person feel, so here’s my summer routine!
Let’s start with skincare. Surprisingly, I don’t have a crazy routine when it comes to skincare. My skin is more on the sensitive side, so I tend to stick to the handful of products that work for me. For my nightly makeup remover and cleanser, I use the Lush Ultrabland Facial Cleanser. This product changed the game for me. It’s oil based, so not only does it break down & remove all the makeup on my face, but it also leaves my skin feeling moisturized – all in one step. After my cleanser, I use the Sunday Riley Martian Mattifying Melting Water-Gel Toner about 2-3 times per week for an extra cleanse.
My favorite product (if I had to pick only one) is the face wash I use in the morning or in the shower. The Skin Laundry Gentle Foaming Face Wash is perfect for sensitive skin, but leaves my face feeling clean. I loved it so much that I got Ashley hooked on it too. I use an exfoliator about 2-3 times a week. My current exfoliator was sent to me in my FabFitFun box, so I’m not sure I’ll be repurchasing when I run out ($$$$$), but it’s definitely a fantastic product. The Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment is very luxe & I’m loving it up while it lasts. Lastly, I use the Glossier. Priming Moisturizer or First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream Intense Hydration to moisturize. I recently learned that my skin is on the dryer side (to my surprise), so this step is crucial before any makeup application!
Now onto the makeup! I’m going to walk you through in the order I’d apply to my face. First is the primer. My favorite primer for summertime is the Too Faced Hangover Replenishing Face Primer. The added moisture & the coconut scent can’t be beat. Once primer is applied, I move on to foundation. I’m a big fan of some full coverage foundation, but in summer I opt for something a little lighter, but still with some buildable coverage. The Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Foundation in Fair Neutral (applied with my Morphe sponge) fits that bill perfectly. Next, I move on to concealer. For spot concealer, I LOVE the Nars Soft Matte Complete Concealer in Light 1 Chantilly, then for under the eyes I use my trusty Tarte Shape Tape in Fair. For setting powder, I use the L’oreal Infallible Pro – Sweep & Lock Loose Setting Face Powder with my beauty blender to set everywhere I just put concealer. That’s it for my base!
Now comes my favorite part! The Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer in Light Bronzer has to be one of my favorite products of all time. Please do yourself a favor & scoop up this bronzer and take a big whiff. It smells like SUMMER. Coconut & sunshine & happiness. I digress. I apply bronzer just below my cheek bones, on my temples, and around my forehead & jaw line. Don’t forget to add some color to your neck as well. Next comes some Kevyn Aucoin Sculpting Contour Powder in Light to carve out my cheek bones & temples. I then lightly apply Mac Powder Blush in Melba on my cheeks (focusing most of the product towards the top of my cheeks – just my personal preference) before applying my highlighter. For highlighter, I go back and forth between my Jouer Powder Highlighter in Citrine or Essence Pure Nude Highlighter in Be My Highlight 01 – or sometimes I apply both, because highlight.
About a year ago I started getting my eyebrows dyed – talk about a GAME CHANGER. I’ve always had super blonde brows & lashes, so it took me a couple weeks to get used to, but now I’ll never go back. Because my brows are dark enough on their own, I just use some Benefit 24-HR Brow Setter to keep everything in place all day.
For eyeshadow, I’m a big fan of a neutral eye for summertime. I like to keep my eye simple so that my highlight and lip can be the star. The Tarte Maneater Palette Version 2 is my favorite neutral palette at the moment. Next, I use the Morphe Continuous Setting Mist to set my whole face. This stuff is the best setting spray you’ll ever find. To finish the eye look, I use about 700 coats of mascara. I start with my Too Faced Better Than Sex for length, then after a couple coats I switch to my L’oreal Voluminous Million Lashes for added volume. For lips, I’ll use NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick in Ruffle Trim in the daytime and transition to Dose of Colors Matte Liquid Lipstick in Campfire or ColourPop Ultra Matte Lip in Mama or Love Bug for a bolder lip at night!
If I were being honest my real summer beauty routine would be empty. I have gotten into the habit of wearing nothing during the summer because I pretty much sweat it all off. But when I do wear makeup I go all out.
My skincare routine is pretty simple. I wash my face each morning (okay, let’s be honest, I wash my face when I feel like it or when I have enough time) with Skin Laundry Gentle Foaming Face Wash and it’s literally my new favorite product. It makes my face feel so soft and clean without drying it out. I love it. I do moisturize every day, and I just started using Burt’s Bees Daily Sensitive Skin Moisturizer. At night to take off my makeup, I use Lush Ultrabland Facial Cleanser. It’s the coolest way to take off your makeup. Trust me, you should try it. Other than that, I try about 2-3 times a week to use a calming mask since my skin is very sensitive and gets irritated easily (my skin and I are very similar) and I use Lush Bunny Moon Face Mask; it’s a jelly mask and it took me a while to get used to, but now I think it’s super fun.
I am by no means a makeup expert. I am a makeup novice for sure. So just keep that in mind while reading this and please don’t judge me if I am totally doing something wrong. I start with IPKN Radiant Cream Primer SPF 15. Making sure that I have a primer with SPF was super important since my skin is so fair. Next is Ulta Color Correcting Liquid Concealer in green to counteract my natural redness. I just started using Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Full Coverage Foundation in Fairly Light Beige and it’s wonderful. As you learned in my skin profile, I have very oily skin. This foundation holds strong against the oily force that is my forehead. I follow that up with my Maybelline Fit me! concealer. Kylie taught me to use my concealer after my foundation because it also acts like a highlighter. I’m cool with it as long as it hides my zits. I lock all that goodness in with my powder foundation, Ulta Mineral Powder Foundation. Even though earlier I tried to get rid of my redness, I now add more redness, but this time only on my cheeks with Covergirl Cheekers. I also giggle like a 13-year-old boy every time I say cheekers. Just a fun fact. Then, to make my already oily face shinier, I use my Milk Makeup Highlighter.
Now onto my eyes! I start with my brows. I am really just starting to learn how to do my brows and since we took these photos I have started using a new product, but here I used Ulta Brow Tint in light. I have learned that the light colored tints make my eyebrows look too orangey, so I started using a light brown tint, so we will see how it goes. Next, to make my eyes POP I used a combination of Ulta eye shadow quad – Verdigris & Urban Decay – Midnight Cowboy. Midnight Cowboy is sparkly and it makes me happy. After that comes the eyeliner, which I am also still learning how to use (Covergirl intensify me! Liquid liner). To top it all off I then use Smashbox x-rated for my lashes and for the final touch, lips! I started using a scrub because I noticed no matter how much water I drank or how much chapstick I used my lips always looked chapped. My favorite scrub is Lush honey lip scrub. It’s basically just sugar so you can lick the extra off when you’re done. I like makeup that I can eat. I follow that up with Burt’s Bees classic and then for the cherry on top, Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Perla. So there you have it. My summer beauty routine!
First of all, don’t listen to me when it comes to makeup. Well, I mean you can, but Kylie is much better than I am and I just end up asking her what to do (#TomboyForever). Just wanted to put that disclaimer out there before you read any further. Another disclaimer – my summer and fall beauty routines are the same because my skin is pretty pale all year round and my closet consists of blacks, greys and navy for all seasons these days.
I recently bought a new skin care product (after going back and forth from the general drug store products) and love it. It smells great, is semi translucent (aka pretty) and Jennifer Aniston swears by it – what’s not to love? It’s Aveeno Positively Radiant Brightening Cleanser and I’m a big fan. I should/will probably add more to my skincare routine soon (because Ashley and Kylie tell me I should), but for now that’s it.
I use a surprising number of expensive items when it comes to my makeup, but they last me forever and I don’t mind splurging a couple times a year for them. I could very easily spend all my money at Ulta, so it’s safer that I don’t go there often. Another thing to know about my beauty routine is that I do it very quickly (because your girl likes to sleep as late as she possibly can). So I’ll go through this quickly for you:
Step 2 – (recently added this per Kylie’s suggestion) L’Oreal Infallible Pro – Sweep & Lock Powder is used to keep Step 1 things on my face longer.
Step 3 – (Also recently added on Kylie’s recommendation) Benefit Pretty In the U.S.A Bronzer Brows Blush & Highlighter Set is awesome. It has the bronzer, blush and highlight all in one pallete and they are all so pretty. On and off my face.
Step 4 – Eyes! Toofaced Chocolate Bon Bons was a gift from one of my friends YEARS ago and I still have it and use and love it. I switch up which colors I used based on what I’m wearing, but let’s be honest, I’m usually wearing black or navy or gray so I’m quickly running out of my faves (See you soon, Ulta). I really like the Tartiest eye liner that has the felt tip and pencil on either end—easy to use for someone who is lazy quick with their makeup. And although I think the name claims more than it can deliver, the Better Than Sex Mascara is pretty great.
Step 5 – I add the finishing touches with the Benefit Goof Proof Brow Pencil cause brows are important these days apparently (thanks, Kylie) and then the Mac Prep + Prime spray to make sure it all stays put.
That’s it! Moral of (my) story is to get products you like (or that Kylie tells you to get) and if you can, splurge on the stuff that will last you a long time.
